Have cartoons changed dramatically between the 90s and now? Why does Cartoon Network show the original Tom and Jerry in the morning then the new Tom and Jerry Tales later in the afternoon?

  1. Yes! Cartoons have changed a lot! i miss all the old Nick shows!! and i've always wondered the same thing.... whats the point? to show how they have "changed it"?

  2. Of course the cartoons have changed. Cartoons cannot stay the same if they want to air for more than a couple seasons. That is the difference between animes and cartoons. Animes actually have a story line that will eventually end. Cartoons are just the same settings with a new story and nothing to go in line with, unless they have some sort of cliffhanger. Cartoons also stay with their target audience, children, teens, etc, and not their original audience.

    1. That's not completely true. There are cartoons that are just slapstick, but those almost always run as episodes rather than series. Simultaneously, think of those old Saturday morning cartoons. They had a storyline, cheesy usually, but a storyline all the same. Also some anime do the same no real storyline slapstick. To truly understand, look at comics. Newspaper comics are rather slapstick, they will be around "forever" so I build a story you'll have to keep reviving to continue (*cough* American superhero comics * cough*). To build a storyline is to admit it will end. So when you get a real comic or cartoon with a story, you continue to read to see how it ends. As for growing with the audience, that's the nature of anything long enough. No one starts a story in the middle, but no one stays forever young. Also it's actually quite rare in anime, except these super popular lifetime series. So everything starts aimed at one audience, some just remain long enough to grow with them.

Sorry for the rant, it was just important for my point. Slapsticks are meant to be endless, they just adjust to stay modern. Same reason most video games aren't 8-bit. Kids would ask why the crappy graphics. Children's idea of comedy changes with the times, so the writers and animaters try to stay relevant. As for when they air, older people watch before work or are unemployed (day time). Kids get home from school around 4 (afternoon).

Sorry for the essay, but in case it had to do with your topic I wanted you to get the full picture.

Maybe Dr. Depolo will count it as one of mine. :-)
